If a stranger knocks on your door surely the last thing you expect to asked is if he can sleep in your house. Well, it was that the way we introduce ourselves each one of the more than 1,500 days we were on the route. Without shame or doubt, without detours or more introduction than our clear look of travelers, when one day it ended wherever it was, in India, in Namibia or in the United States of America, we looked for a door to call and as soon as somebody opened we go with our most used speech on the trip: “We are going around the world on our motorcycle and today we will finish here, we need a place to spend the night, could we stay here?”
In the most natural way possible (but of course, with the experience of doing this question every day for a long time) we return the logic to a question that society made us see as rare and dangerous these days if we make it to strangers, or that taught us to respond with a clear and fast “NO” if it is to us to who was formulate it. But of course, if for a couple of travelers that arrived to the door of your house that question about stay for the night is so logical to be asked, they must have some reason, some story behind is hidden… this is how the curiosity of our potential host is aroused and with it show up an opportunity to present ourselves explaining our story.
It is clear that the stereotypes help and the fact of being a young couple of Europeans who seem to come from the other side of the world on their super-equipped motorcycle help to open a little more that door we want to cross, and although one of us is a bearded man two meters tall… his partner is a nice and chatty girl who knows easily gain confidence of whom we have in front.
But the real key to success is in that magical first moment when they open the door, that couple of seconds we have to recognize our possible host and classify it in an almost telepathic way, deciding as a team how to enter, who starts talking to them, what tone to use, which arguments to explain… In those two seconds our possible host still does not know what is going on, so we play with advantage, we have to play well that card and our empathic skills. 2 seconds to feel if we can trust our unknown host to go to sleep in the house with all our possessions, and if our intuition tells us go for it, then we begin to see how we can earn their trust.
But … what to give in exchange for so much hospitality? Balance and karma became fundamental to believe that we would overcome our challenge of going around the world on a motorcycle, so if we did not compensate in some way for the help that appeared so quickly, we feared that the flow would be cut off.
