We use to think that it need a lot of money to complete a travel around the world on motorcycle, but we think there others things more important to succeed in this goal. These were the 7 rules we respect from the beginning and which help us to pass from being a couple of street vendors to become photographer and storytellers of our own travels:
1. Minimalist planning
Without expectations, traveling without planning and leaving the door open to surprises, that’s why when we decided to go around the world our planning was resume to put a map of the world in front of us and choose three places that we decided to connect with our motorcycle. Uluru, Ushuaia and Deadhorse would be our cardinal points, our checkpoints. The path that would unite them would be a mystery, following the signs that the journey itself would leave us.
2. Reduce your luggage to the minimum
For us luggage are all those things we carry during the journey, both physical like camping gear and not physical like a mortgage, a credit, a company under your direction …. The lighter our luggage is the easier and farther we can reach. If you manage to get rid of responsibilities the only thing you have to worry about is to select from all the stuff you have in your house those necessaries ones that can fit in a couple of suitcases. To life in the road you will also need kitchen, office, workshop or a bedroom, now your motorbike is your home and everything has to be portable and small. Camping and kitchen equipment, photographic and computer gear, tools and spare parts for the motorcycle, some casual clothes and our uniform (suits, helmets, boots and gloves) is all we need. Learning to live with less things is the best way to start flying.
3. Without budget for accommodation
At the beginning it seemed one of the more difficult rules to respect but today we can say that we don´t need more than 15 minutes since we arrived to a new destination where we know nobody until we find a place to spend the night. The main motivation to decide not to pay for a place to sleep goes far beyond the economic point of view. This rule turns the accommodation in our main source of stories and experiences because we forced ourselves to spend more time with local people. The range of places where we have slept is so wide that it goes from hospitals, religious temples, firemen and police stations, outdoors camping, social centers or town halls, but mainly the homes of many families who opened the doors of their house for our rest.
4. Learn the universal language
It is impossible to learn all the languages that people talk in all the places we visited, but we can keep communication going if we memorize a few words and remember three basic rules, respect, adaptation and smile.
We discover that communication goes beyond of knowing the language, respecting their culture and adapting to their customs will make anyone open themselves and to share their world with us.
5. Open mind to new skills
we had never written before for another person to read it, we didn´t performance talks or studied photography but today these communication skills are the way that allows us to finance our journey. Although getting to this point was not a decision we planned, It was in the most natural way during our journey how we discovered this storyteller skills, then we focused on them until understand that to become photographers, speakers or reporters is not always necessary to have been study in a good school.
6. Faith in your project
The 10 years before to the beginning of our world tour we been working with our own handcrafts. We produce by hand jewelry with stones and metals that we sold and distributed, a profession that after long time let us many lessons, experiences and contacts that we could use to earn the money we need during the travel. We could have created an online shop or sell in the different destinations where we would arrive during the trip, believing that in that way we should not worry about how to cover our expenses. But instead we decided to invest all the time and energy we had in working for the project, even if we had to start with new world and market for us in where we had no experience. We start writing and making pictures documenting this unique experience in our lifes, and although the final product may not be the best because our lack of experience at least it was real and made with passion and this is a very strong value to sell it. Sometimes we just must avoid the economic profit to be one of the motivations.
7. Never give up as an unbreakable rule
Find a very personal motivation and keep a positive attitude in front of any obstacle. Don´t doubt it, there are going to be many hard moments when you will think about to finish with the journey and just go home. Accidents, violent attempts at robbery, broken bones needing surgery in remote places or facing some extreme weather conditions are situations that we already have to deal with. But it is when you overcome these complications when you are learning and growing with the journey. Do not give up, remember the message you have to share has a incredibly valuable, you have to show the beauty of this world to those who do not travel and follow you from their homes, is important to motivate them to leave it there without fear. A better world is possible if more people decide start a journey.
