If you a a young guy probably you think that It seems news media want you to believe that today the world is much more dangerous than ever before, also that the financial system wants you to sign a loan from an early age because they say this is the best way to get a future or even you feel how the society insists on telling that traveling for pleasure for long time is just a way to throw your time and money in a garbage bin.
Yeah, generally long journeys are not very much promoted, but still like that why Millennials can be considered the most traveling generation in history?
People like us who love traveling on motorcycle and enjoy following the experiences from others travelers have realized that there are a growing number of young people who left everything behind and decide to travel around the world without a limit of time, even when they haven´t achieved economic and professional stability. What happened to emerge this tendency which many middle-class young people are choosing as lifestyle? Surely our personal story can help to find an explanation for that question. These are our conclusions:
It´s Peace times. The wars of the 20th make people to travel because of the necessity of finding better place where to live and work, while the peace agreements between countries of the 21st century allowed us to have the option of traveling for pleasure. We went from emigrants to tourists, and in the best case to travelers
The access to information through the internet definitely helped to open the minds of many people about the idea they got for our planet, first inviting them to question if really everything is so dangerous at the other side of the borders as they been always told and then to travel and discover the world by themselves to end up changing completely their mind and of course, motivating other people to get involve in a travel project.
Change of preferences in Western countries related to paternity. Although it seems incoherent today we appreciate more the life even if that means having less children. Very few people choose today to have a baby before to reach 30 years old. Now we understand that this is the best time of our lives to get new experiences and long trips without a return ticket is of course one of the main ways for it. We saw this very clear when we arrived to countries like Sudan, Uzbekistan or India where they always asked us what was the reason for traveling and not having children even when we were married and we were so old for them (Ivana was barely 30). In Western society, the answer would be clear and understandable but in different cultures, it was not so easy to explain them.
Millennials were adult enough when born the low cost airlines companies. At the beginning of the 21st century, flying by plane stops being a privilege for the rich people and so in Europe for about 20 dollars, cities such as Barcelona, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome or London were connected. Experiencing different cultures, foods and languages was possible for any young person who have a job as a waiter. Was like that how many people were infected for the traveling spirit.
We have social media. If a traveler of the last century needed months so just one of his articles can be published and readed now we only need a second to get thousands of people see and read our stories no matter how far we are, sharing how we arrived in remote places without dramatic problems and how people from all around the world received us with open arms. Social media turn the experiences of some traveler in the motivation for a follower who want also to travel but who is afraid for starting.
The possibility of generating income far from home. Today the work system is completely different than it was for the previous generation, more and more machines are responsible for physical work in factories while born other kind of jobs that need only a computer which we can transport with us anywhere around. Graphic designers, marketing, communication, programmers or influencers are mainly jobs that many travelers can carry out while traveling.
Right at this very moment while reading these lines there are many travelers who with their motorbikes are crossing many of the countries in this planet, possibly even for some of them today is the first day of their journey around the world. Within these travelers we could say that in general on one hand we have the Millennials with tight budgets that began to travel on motorbike at an early age and on the other hand an older generation with much bigger budget who decided at an advanced age, when they had economic and familiar stability enough, to take a sabbatical year traveling the world. But why did the Millennials not need to invest many years of their youth in achieving that stability previously? We are sure that the boom of backpacking trips influenced a lot. Many of the young people traveling today on two wheels had a previous experience as backpackers in South America or Southeast Asia (regions that improved their security and offer the best adventures). Backpackers learn fast that money is not the most important thing for to keep moving in a journey and discover many new skills that would help them to get some extra income to cover their expenses.
Platforms like WorkAway or Couchsurfing that work all over the world are certainly quite common among millennials to get a place to sleep for free. Reduce the cost of accommodation was to open a great door for young people to jump into long trips that last for months or years.
Better motorcycles and better roads. The production of motorcycles has improved a lot allowing to lower their prices and offer high quality vehicles prepared for long trips. Beside that, the infrastructures from every country have progressed to the point that anyone with the desire to travel by motorcycle can do it, even without having too much experience riding. Conversely in the last century the risk of suffering a dramatic problem crossing certain countries was very high and only the most adventurous and experienced travelers dared with such a challenge.
Seen in this way that the first conclusion for many readers will be that despite all the psychological barriers today to get on a motorcycle around the world is infinitely easier than it was for our parents, some people will not agree but what is clear is that in both the last century and the present one the motorcycle trips have two points in common: that leaving everything behind to start a journey will always involve sacrifices and risks and that it takes courage to listen to that traveler instinct and take the first step on a path that we do not know where it take us.

Maybe now we are more travelers in numbers than before, but after writing this article a question come to my mind, were better the experiences of a traveler during the last century or from a traveler of this century?
That question must be answered for those who rode a motorcycle a few decades ago. Leave us your answer through a social media message and help us find the conclusion with which to prepare our next report.
