Traveling by motorcycle is everytime the dream of more and more people who want to travel feeling the wind in their faces, without depending on organized tours and mainly to experience this kind of freedom that only motorcycle allows. However most of this people don´t dare to start this motorcycle trip because the think there are too many risks around it, too expensive or because they think they don´t have enough experience riding bikes. Well, let´s start saying that we managed to make that dream come true and before we started we even didn´t know how to drive a motorcycle.
More than 4 years later we completed a journey around of the world visiting 69 countries spread across all continents. If you have in mind to jump into a motorcycle trip this are the tips that we want to share with you:
1. Light luggage
You will change the house for a motorcycle and everything you can take will be reduced to what fits in a couple of suitcases. Learn how to leave things behind and focus only on what is necessary, especially with clothes: less is better.
2. Emergency supplies
It takes little space and if the time comes when you need them better have them with you: first aid kit, matches, whistle, emergency blanket, energy bars, lantern, and some medicines for infections.
3. Quick check of the motorbike every morning
Surely if we do not have any idea about mechanics at least check the level of the oil, that the air filter is clean, that the chain is oiled and the pressure of the wheels.
4. Take a look at the weather forecast the night before
Knowing what conditions you will face the next day will be essential to successfully complete the stage, especially if you are traveling through deserts, mountains or jungle areas.
5. Gear for all types of weather
Motorcycle trips have one characteristic and is that there is no another way to travel where the weather conditions can affect more to your body: the cold, the humidity, the heat or the wind can be a extreme experience if you move by motorcycle, so your suits will be your second skin so better choose ones that can adapt to each circumstance.
6. Stop to rest
When we are riding on normal routes, with asphalt and in good condition, we stop every 100 km or every hour and a half at least. A 10 minutes break means a big change when it comes to safety on the road.
7. You should know well the autonomy of your gas tank
Mainly in deserts where you can not find service stations often or sometimes do not even exist and then you have to go asking the locals if someone has some gasolina at home.
8. Remember that the most important thing is the journey and not the destination
Do not obsess about getting to a specific place and have stages that do not exceed 200 or 300 km per day, relax and enjoy the trip.
9. Avoid highways
In the small roads and villages is the real magic of a motorcycle travel.
10. Keep the motivation high
The problems will always come in a motorcycle trip but these will be less serious if you change the chip and see them as an opportunity to learn new lessons and grow as a traveler and person.
11. Get a travel insurance for you and an insurance for your motorcycle
In our first trips we did not think it was a necessary expense but over time it became absolutely essential for us. It is not the same a small accident or illness in your own country or in a different one, it does not matter if it is Malawi or the United States the cost of health care is usually too expensive.
12. Stay hydrated
Drink water even when you are not thirsty because dehydration can be an invisible enemy. Sometimes you do not realize the physical exhaustion of riding a motorcycle. You will avoid problems and you will recover faster from fatigue if you drink water frequently. We recommend you to carry one of those backpack with a water bag.
13. Ear plugs
Try avoid destroying your ears after hours and hours of motorcycle travel.
14. Light meals
Traveling by motorcycle is better if your digestions is not heavy. A good breakfast with oatmeal, fruit and yogurt and during the trip eat every sometime nuts or a little bread with honey, that will give you energy and help you to satisfy the feeling of hunger.
